Bhakti Yoga

Beyond the Physical

Unveiling the Depths of Bhakti Yoga

While many associate yoga with physical postures, its essence lies deeper. The word yoga itself originates from the Sanskrit yuj, signifying connection or union. Bhakti, derived from bhaj, meaning loving service, and so bhakti-yoga translates to connecting with the divine through devoted love.

The Bhagavad-gita, a foundational sacred text, outlines various yoga paths, comprising bhakti-yoga, karma-yoga (acting with awareness), and jnana-yoga (seeking wisdom through contemplation).

Modern practitioners often prioritize the physical benefits of hatha-yoga (physical postures and breathing exercises), but traditional spiritual schools view these exercises as stepping stones on the path to spiritual realization. Ultimately, the Gita establishes bhakti-yoga, the path of love and dedication, as the pinnacle of yogic practices. Bhakti-yoga cultivates devotion, service, and love for the divine—Lord Krishna.

Cultivating Love through Bhakti Practices

This path unfolds through various activities. Bhakti yoga involves mantra meditation, chanting sacred names of God either individually on prayer beads (japa) or in group settings with music (kirtan). Studying scripture like the Bhagavad-gita and Srimad Bhagavatam deepens understanding. Connecting with like-minded individuals in a spiritual community fosters growth. Consuming sanctified vegetarian food aligns with spiritual principles, and embracing values of truthfulness, compassion, austerity, and cleanliness purifies the journey. These practices weave together to form a life devoted to bhakti yoga.
