gaura-kisoraGiriraj Swami read and spoke from Sri Bhaktisiddhanta Vaibhava by Bhakti Vikasa Swami.

“After much hullabaloo a babaji remonstrated, ‘Siddhanta Sarasvati is not a renunciant and therefore not eligible to establish a samadhi for a renunciant.’ Prabhupada [Sidddhanta Sarasvati] thunderously retorted, ‘I am the only initiated disciple of Paramahamsa Babaji Maharaja. Even though I am not officially a renunciant I am a celibate bramacari. And by the grace of Babaji Maharaja I’m not secretly addicted to abominable habits nor engaged in fornication as are certain simian people.’ ”

“Humility is not a matter of an outward posture of being humble. A disciple once said to Srila Prabhupada, ‘Srila Prabhupada, I am the most fallen,’ and Prabhupada replied, ‘You are not the most anything.’ He was cutting through the false humility.

“Anyone can fold their hands and say, ‘Prabhu, I am you servant. Please order me — whatever you like.’ The real test of our humility comes when things don’t go the way we want. Then we see how much we can tolerate. If we are actually humble, we will be able to tolerate. But if we are not actually humble, then we’ll not be able to tolerate. . . .

“It is very easy to maintain a posture of humility when everything is organized and controlled, when things are going just the way we want, but when someone does something we don’t like, or when circumstances conspire against our wishes and plans, our humility tested. Then we see how real, or deep, our humility is.

“For us the best way to manifest genuine humility is to work cooperatively for the benefit for others.”

Giriraj Swami read and commented from Srimad-Bhagavatam 7.7.30.

“Sometimes, due to circumstances, a devotee may be living away from a temple and the association of a community of devotees. That is a difficult situation to be in. In that case, one should try to make the association with one’s family members as spiritual as possible.

We need to engage all our resources, and the way to do that is by preaching. So if by chance we live far from a temple, we should make our home like a temple. That means more than just having an altar with Deities or pictures; it means that the activities in our home should be the same as the activities in the temple. And we should preach — invite people to our homes and go out and have programs. We can start our own temple and make our own community of devotees.”
