SB 7.9.19 – Guaranteed Protection in Troubled Times

June 21, 2020
Zoom hosted by ISKCON Orlando

Host 1: We are live, Prabhu. We can start.

Host 2: Okay. Thank you very much. I will introduce our guest speaker for today. We are very extremely fortunate that His Holiness Giriraj Maharaja was able to take out his time and speak to all of us today. This is a very good opportunity for us to hear from Maharaja and the topic that Maharaja has chosen “The guaranteed protection during these troubled times” is very important to all of us. Most of us are going through different situations, different issues, different problems in life, and Maharaja to come and talk on this topic is going to be just like water on the fire, so this is very important. Please, if you know anyone else who would want to take advantage, you can message them, text them separately on your phone, so they can also join this session.

This session is also live on Facebook under ISKCON Orlando, everyone can watch under ISKCON Orlando and also through this Zoom coordinates. I’m not sure if Maharaja has joined yet, but I will continue with his introduction.

Giriraj Swami: I have joined.

Host 2: Oh Maharaja, please accept my humble obeisances, all glories to Prabhupada. I will say a few words of introduction of you Maharaja, and I’ll hand over the phone call to you. Again, we are very fortunate that we have Giriraj Maharaja joining us under the banner of ISKCON Orlando today, he has been giving talks almost every day and many other devotees have been having him speak. Again, as I said, we are very lucky, very fortunate to have him speak on this important topic: “Guaranteed protection through these troubled times.”

Giriraj Maharaja was born as Glenn Phillip, the only son of a respected Chicago lawyer, who was later appointed as judge. In March of 1969, while studying at the Brandeis University in Boston, he met His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivinoda Swami Prabhupada, the founder-acharya of ISKCON movement, from whom he felt he learned more in one brief exchange than he had learned in his years of academic education.

After graduating from Brandeis cum laude, he accepted formal initiation from Srila Prabhupada and received the spiritual name of Giriraj dasa. Maharaja quickly became a leading member of the Boston centre and he was soon given the opportunity to go to India with Srila Prabhupada to help establish Srila Prabhupada’s mission over there. In 1972, Maharaja was appointed by Srila Prabhupada to be the president of ISKCON Bombay and a trustee of the Bhaktivedanta Book Trust. He has made many significant contributions to Srila Prabhupada’s mission, most notably overseeing the development of the Hare Krishna Land in Juhu, Mumbai; he has directed the Society’s Activities in Mumbai, in Mauritius, in South Africa, Spain, Portugal, Sri Lanka, and Pakistan.

He has been very instrumental in the acquisition and the development of the Bhaktivedanta Ashram in Govardhana and Maharaja has led development of the Kirtan Ashram for women, the Bhaktivedanta hospice and the Vrindavan Institute of Palliative Care, all in Vrindavan.

Presently Giriraj Maharaja is based in Carpinteria, California, and he is focusing on one of his personal instructions that he received from Srila Prabhupada and that is to write. Today he has already offered many wonderful books, Watering the Seed, Many Moons, and the forthcoming book is I’ll Build You a Temple: The Juhu Story, and the editor of Life’s Final Exam. He is working on several publications, including books about his search for a spiritual master and his early days in the Boston temple, his travels with Srila Prabhupada in India and the Vaishnava holy days.

He has become very renowned for the austerities that he has accepted, his loyalty, his dedication to Srila Prabhupada’s mission, his ability to inspire and engage important members of the society, and his care for the devotees around the world. Once again, Maharaja we are very grateful that you have been able to spare some time and speak to all of us. Now I will hand over the call to you. Thank you Maharaja, Hare Krishna.

Giriraj Swami: Hare Krishna. I will begin by singing the maṅgala-ācaraṇa prayers and leading a short kirtan. Then I will speak on today’s topic from Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam.

[Prayers]

I will read one verse from Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam Canto Seven, Chapter Nine, Prahlada Pacifies the Lord with Prayers, Text Nineteen.

TEXT 19

bālasya neha śaraṇaṁ pitarau nṛsiṁha

nārtasya cāgadam udanvati majjato nauḥ

taptasya tat-pratividhir ya ihāñjaseṣṭas

tāvad vibho tanu-bhṛtāṁ tvad-upekṣitānām

TRANSLATION

My Lord Nṛsiṁhadeva, O Supreme, because of a bodily conception of life, embodied souls neglected and not cared for by You cannot do anything for their betterment. Whatever remedies they accept, although perhaps temporarily beneficial, are certainly impermanent. For example, a father and mother cannot protect their child, a physician and medicine cannot relieve a suffering patient, and a boat on the ocean cannot protect a drowning man.

PURPORT by Srila Prabhupada

Through parental care, through remedies for different kinds of disease, and through means of protection on the water, in the air and on land, there is always an endeavor for relief from various kinds of suffering in the material world, but none of them are guaranteed measures for protection.

COMMENT

There is always suffering in the material world and there is always an effort to avoid the suffering or counteract the suffering. Now with the Coronavirus pandemic people are acutely aware of how vulnerable they are in the material world, and naturally, they want some shelter or protection. But the material shelter or protection is not guaranteed to work, even if perhaps it works temporarily, but ultimately it provides no permanent solution, which we all want and need.

PURPORT (continued)

Despite the presence of a father and mother, a child cannot be protected from accidental death, disease and various other miseries. No one can help, including the parents. Ultimately the shelter is the Lord, and one who takes shelter of the Lord is protected.

COMMENT

Once Srila Prabhupada was sitting in his room in Juhu, at the back of Hare Krishna Land, and he heard a child crying in the background. He quoted this verse—Srila Prabhupada related everything to shastra and the philosophy of Krishna consciousness, so he heard that child crying in the background and he quoted this verse: “Even the mother and father cannot give protection to the child.”

PURPORT (continued)

No one can help, including the parents. Ultimately the shelter is the Lord, and one who takes shelter of the Lord is protected. This is guaranteed. As the Lord says in Bhagavad-gītā (9.31), kaunteya pratijānīhi na me bhaktaḥ praṇaśyati: “O son of Kuntī, declare it boldly that My devotee never perishes.” Therefore, unless one is protected by the mercy of the Lord, no remedial measure can act effectively. One should consequently depend fully on the causeless mercy of the Lord.

COMMENT

As it is said, kṛṣṇa rākhe māre ke, kṛṣṇa māre rākhe ke: “If Krishna wants to kill someone, who can protect him? And if Krishna wants to save someone, who can kill him?” Krishna is the ultimate authority, He is the ultimate shelter, He is the ultimate protector. At all times, in the material world we are vulnerable, but especially now with the Coronavirus pandemic, we are especially vulnerable and the only guaranteed protection is the Lord’s. Nothing else is guaranteed.

PURPORT (continued)

Although as a matter of routine duty one must of course accept other remedial measures.

COMMENT

Such as a doctor and medicine.

PURPORT (continued)

Although as a matter of routine duty one must of course accept other remedial measures, no one can protect one who is neglected by the Supreme Personality of Godhead. In this material world, everyone is trying to counteract the onslaught of material nature, but everyone is ultimately fully controlled by material nature.

COMMENT

Yes, material nature is under Krishna’s control, and we are under material nature’s control. And the only way that we can escape the miseries of material existence is to surrender to the Lord. In the Bhagavad-gītā Lord Krishna says: daivī hy eṣā guṇa-mayī mama māyā duratyayā: “This material energy consisting of the three modes is very difficult to overcome.” Mām eva ye prapadyante māyām etāṁ taranti te, “but one who surrenders to Me can easily cross beyond it.”

This is corroborated by a beautiful verse in Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam. Although a boat in the material world is no guarantee of protection, some years ago there was a ship called the Titanic, which was advertised that it could never sink. On its maiden voyage from England to America, so many wealthy and aristocratic people joined for the voyage, but on the way, the boat collided with an iceberg which opened up a huge gash in the hull of the ship. The ship sank and almost everyone on board the ship died. So as mentioned here in the verse, nauḥ means “A boat,” udanvati majjato nauḥ, “A boat is no guaranteed protection against drowning in the ocean.”

But there is another boat that does offer guaranteed protection, and that is the boat of the lotus feet of the Lord. There is a beautiful verse in Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, Tenth Canto, Chapter Fourteen, Text Fifty-Eight, which we used to sing every morning in the old Boston temple, and I will sing it now because it’s so nice, both the Sanskrit and the meaning. I know it by heart but I am looking it up so that I can give you the word for word meaning.

TEXT 58

samāśritā ye pada-pallava-plavaṁ

mahat-padaṁ puṇya-yaśo murāreḥ

bhavāmbudhir vatsa-padaṁ paraṁ padaṁ

padaṁ padaṁ yad vipadāṁ na teṣām

TRANSLATION

For those who have accepted the boat of the lotus feet of the Lord, who is the shelter of the cosmic manifestation and is famous as Murāri, the enemy of the Mura demon, the ocean of the material world is like the water contained in a calf’s hoof-print.

COMMENT

Although there is danger at every step, the devotee crosses right over it. There is no problem for a devotee who takes shelter of the boat of the lotus feet of the Lord in crossing over the ocean of material existence and attaining the realm of Vaikuntha, where there is no anxiety. Kunta means anxiety and Vai means without. Everyone in the material world is always in anxiety, but we hanker to be free from anxiety, and that freedom can be achieved only in Vaikuntha, the place where there is no anxiety. We can reach Vaikuntha by boarding the boat of the lotus feet of the Lord. Now I’ll return to this beautiful purport by Srila Prabhupada.

Therefore even though so-called philosophers and scientists try to surmount the onslaught of material nature, they have not been able to do so. Kṛṣṇa says in Bhagavad-gītā (13.9) that the real sufferings of the material world are four — janma-mṛtyu-jarā-vyādhi (birth, death, old age and disease). In the history of the world, no one has been successful in conquering these miseries imposed by material nature.

COMMENT

In the Thirteenth Chapter of the Bhagavad-gītā, Lord Krishna describes what is knowledge and He mentions janma-mṛtyu-jarā-vyādhi-duḥkha-doṣānudarśanam. One should always be conscious of the miseries of birth, death, old age, and disease. And as Srila Prabhupada says, these miseries have never been eradicated by any material means. In fact, as long as we are in a material body, we have to suffer these miseries and we can become free from them only when we become Krishna conscious and are liberated from our material bodily existence.

Janma (birth), often there is agitation to stop birth or to decrease the rate of birth because of overpopulation. Srila Prabhupada did not accept the theory of overpopulation because he said, “Krishna is the Supreme Father”—it’s Father’s-day today—“Krishna is the Supreme Father and as such it’s His responsibility to provide for all of His children, and He does.” And Srila Prabhupada said, “Well, one could raise the question that Krishna didn’t know that there were going to be so many children,” and Srila Prabhupada countered that objection by quoting the verse from the Bhagavad-gītā, in which Krishna says He knows past, present, and future. He knew how many living entities there would be to feed, and as the father, He is providing for them. But still people have this fear about overpopulation, and therefore, they want to decrease birth, that’s janma, but they have never succeeded in that.

Mṛtyu, nobody wants to die but nobody has been able to stop death, as sure as death. Jarā means old age, nobody wants to suffer the inconveniences and disabilities of old age, but no one has been able to stop old age. By some cosmetic procedures, we might mask some of the signs of old age, like wrinkles, but we cannot stop old age, we cannot stop all the miseries that come with old age.

And vyādhi, disease, we cannot stop disease. I mean, sometimes we may come up with a treatment for one disease, but then another disease will come. If we could actually stop disease the hospital should be empty, the doctors and nurses should go home without work; if we were actually stopping disease, but we are not stopping disease. Rather disease is increasing, there is always a clamour for more hospitals, more beds, more doctors, more nurses. So, these four miseries, janma-mṛtyu-jarā-vyādhi (birth, death, old age, and disease) cannot be stopped by any material means.

PURPORT (continued)

Even though so-called philosophers and scientists try to surmount the onslaught of material nature, they have not been able to do so. Prakṛteḥ kriyamāṇāni guṇaiḥ karmāṇi sarvaśaḥ. Nature (prakṛti) is so strong that no one can overcome her stringent laws.

COMMENT

I heard one talk by Srila Prabhupada recently in which he was saying that the laws of nature are very strict, and if you overeat, there will be consequences you may get indigestion. So, at every step of our lives, we are being challenged to follow the laws of nature, because if we transgress them, there are reactions.

PURPORT (continued)

Nature (prakṛti) is so strong that no one can overcome her stringent laws. So-called scientists, philosophers, religionists and politicians should therefore conclude that they cannot offer facilities to the people in general.

COMMENT

I mean, that would be honest if they admitted that by their material methods, they could not really help people. That would be honest, and then they could make progress.

PURPORT (continued)

So-called scientists, philosophers, religionists and politicians should therefore conclude that they cannot offer facilities to the people in general. They should make vigorous propaganda to awaken the populace and raise them to the platform of Kṛṣṇa consciousness.

COMMENT

That would be real service to the population.

PURPORT (continued)

Our humble attempt to propagate the Kṛṣṇa consciousness movement all over the world is the only remedy that can bring about a peaceful and happy life. We can never be happy without the mercy of the Supreme Lord (tvad-upekṣitānām).

COMMENT

As one who is not cared for and protected by the Supreme Lord cannot do anything for his betterment.

PURPORT (continued)

We can never be happy without the mercy of the Supreme Lord (tvad-upekṣitānām). If we keep displeasing our supreme father, we shall never be happy within this material world, in either the upper or lower planetary systems.

COMMENT

There are relativities, even on this planet there are relativities. America, for example, is more opulent than other places, but still, everywhere, whether in the so-called higher position or in a so-called lower position, one has to suffer janma-mṛtyu-jarā-vyādhi, birth death old age and disease. No one is exempt, no matter how wealthy, opulent, or resourceful you are, you will be subject to birth, death, old age, and disease. The only refuge, the only escape, the only solution is to take shelter of the Lord and be protected by the Lord. That is guaranteed, nothing else is guaranteed.

My dear devotees, in this difficult time when there are so many dangers, calamities, and threats, we should know for sure that only the Lord can protect us and no one and nothing else. We should make this our priority, our life actually. We should make it our life to take shelter of the Lord and chant His holy names: Hare Krishna, Hare Krishna, Krishna Krishna, Hare Hare / Hare Rama, Hare Rama, Rama Rama, Hare Hare.

Thank you very much, and now we can see if any of you have any questions or comments. I guess if you have a question you can raise your hand or maybe send it in the chat. I think raising your hand is good. Hare Krishna Brittany.

Devotee: Hare Krishna Maharaja, happy father’s day.

Giriraj Swami: Thank you.

Devotee: I wanted to ask you a question regarding your bhakti-vriksa program about criticizing devotees. As a neophyte, one of the ways in the material world that I’ve always been corrected and have improved has been through criticism. So as a neophyte, how do senior devotees make sure I’m progressing without criticism? Hare Krishna.

Giriraj Swami: That is a good question. Actually, there is a difference between fault finding and constructive criticism. Constructive criticism is valuable, as you said, it will help us to improve. As you know, I’m a writer and everything I write is seen by four editors. In a way, you could say that if they find a mistake or if they find a way that something could be said better, that they are criticizing. But their intention is not to criticize, their intention is to serve me by making my writing better. So yes, we should serve the other devotees by telling them how they can do better, provided the devotee wants to be told how to improve.

You are always at liberty to tell people, “I have a lot to learn and you are very experienced, knowledgeable, and intelligent, so if you see any ways in which I can improve, please tell me.” You can always invite that constructive criticism, and it will be healthy, it would be beneficial. That’s very different from fault finding, just looking for faults for the sake of seeing bad in others, that’s very different. Good question.

Devotee: Thank you. Hare Krishna.

Giriraj Swami: Are there any other questions or comments?

Devotee: Hare Krishna Maharaja. This is a very wonderful session that you have taken here today. I wanted to ask you this question, and especially in your time with Srila Prabhupada in the Juhu temple and

Giriraj Swami: Can we see your face?

Devotee: Okay one second let me turn on the camera.

Giriraj Swami: Moonlight face. Good.

Devotee: My name is Dorpan dasa from ISKCON Orlando.

Giriraj Swami: Yes, you corresponded with me.

Devotee: Maharaja, you took a very wonderful sloka today and we also always get pacified by reading Srila Prabhupada’s books, where we get the guidance of how to react or counteract the troubled situations. I wanted to know from your background, when you were managing the Juhu project in India or in the early days. I don’t want to say it, but maybe you all were so busy you could not be able to read all the books, but then what was your—how would you be going through to solve the problems? Because you were managing so many projects on your own, and you may not have been going through the Seventh Canto that time. So, what was your inspiration to counteract the troubled times or difficult times that you would be going through? Especially in a foreign land like India and taking over different projects.

Giriraj Swami: Well, we had Srila Prabhupada’s guidance. And it’s true, sometimes he kept us so busy that we didn’t have time to read. Once it was bothering me that I didn’t have time to read, so I approached him about it in his room in Calcutta. He quoted a verse, nasta-prayesv abhadresu nityam bhāgavata-sevaya, which means that by serving the person bhāgavata or reading the book bhāgavata, one gets the same result. So, he was encouraging me that even though I didn’t have time to read the book bhāgavata, but because I was serving him, who is the person bhāgavata, I would get the same results. And he said that by serving the person bhāgavata, all the truths of the book bhāgavata will be revealed to you.

I think of Srila Gaurakisora dasa Babaji Maharaja, who was the spiritual master of Srila Prabhupada’s guru Maharaja, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura. Srila Gaurakisora sasa Babaji Maharaja was practically illiterate; it is said he couldn’t even sign his name. But because of his deep Krishna consciousness, scholars would bring him questions on Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam and he would be able to answer them. Yasya deve parā bhaktir yathā deva tathā gurau: to one who has implicit faith in the spiritual master and Krishna, all the imports of the Vedic knowledge are revealed.

So, faith in the spiritual master and faith in Krishna are most important, and if one has that faith, all the truths of the Vedas will be revealed to him. Does that answer your question?

Devotee: Yes, it was a wonderful response and coming from Srila Prabhupada, it gives us good firm faith that serving him is the same as saving the book bhāgavata. Thank you Maharaja, Hare Krishna.

Giriraj Swami: Hare Krishna. Are there any other questions or comments?

Devotee: I have a question.

Giriraj Swami: Yes, this is Suchariya devi dasi, Srila Prabhupada’s disciple in Dallas.

Devotee: Hare Krishna Maharaja. Thank you so much for this nectar. Lord Krishna is saying that the best protection is to take shelter of His lotus feet. There are many ways, there are nine processes of devotional service, so is taking shelter of the Lord’s lotus feet carefully following the spiritual master, who represents Him and trying to do the nine processes of devotional service? I guess, are there many ways to take shelter of the lotus feet of the Lord?

Giriraj Swami: Well, in one sense there is only one way, which is bhakti. As Krishna says in the Gītā, bhaktyā mām abhijānāti, that only by devotional service can He be understood, and only in that way can one enter the mysteries of His understanding. But as you said, devotional service can be executed in different ways. Prahlada Maharaja gave nine processes, śravaṇaṁ kīrtanaṁ viṣṇoḥ smaraṇaṁ and so on. And there are examples of devotees who attain perfection through just one of those nine processes, so you can engage in one or two or three or all nine. But generally, we need variety, we are not at that stage where we can just absorb ourselves day and night in chanting or hearing, so we need variety. Sometimes we chant the holy name, sometimes we read the revealed scriptures, and sometimes we worship the deity or attend the deity worship ceremonies. In this way, we engage in different of the nine processes so that we can always be engaged.

But otherwise, it’s an individual matter, it is a matter of personal taste. Of course, the order of the spiritual master or the representatives of the spiritual master come first, but that’s for sure, if you are instructed to do a particular service then you must do that. But otherwise, if there is no such instruction, then you can engage in any one or more of the nine processes and please Krishna.

Devotee: Thank you very much, thank you.

Giriraj Swami: Hare Krishna. Are there any other questions or comments?

Host 2: I think Manish Prabhu, you have raised your hand, do you want to unmute yourself and go ahead?

Devotee: Hare Krishna Maharaja.

Giriraj Swami: Hare Krishna.

Devotee: Please accept my humble obeisances. Maharaja I just have a comment. While reading books by Prabhupada and Krishna books gives me a lot of solace, and the same happens when I hear your lectures online, so this was just the realization I had and I wanted to share with you. Whenever I hear you, I feel so much comfortable, and I really feel the same if I’m reading books about Krishna or maybe reading books by Srila Prabhupada. I feel the same thing when I hear you, so that’s what I wanted to share.

Giriraj Swami: Oh, that’s nice, I’m glad. Thank you, thank you very much.

Devotee: Hare Krishna.

Giriraj Swami: Hare Krishna. Any more comments or questions?

Host 2: Hare Krishna Maharaja. ISKCON Orlando Facebook Live, many devotees are saying “Happy father’s day.” Please bless them.

Giriraj Swami: Okay, I wish them all the best, we’ll pray for them. So if there is nothing more we could conclude by singing the Nṛsiṁha prayers, which would be most appropriate. Should we do that?

Host 2: Yes Maharaja.

Devotee: Ramsaru Prabhu, did you have a question? Ramsaru Prabhu, did you have a question? Because I saw what you wrote in the chat. Maharaja, I will read out his question. Ramsaru Prabhu is a devotee, he has a question: We have a tendency that even after seeing all the problems around us, for example, the current pandemic, we continue to think that we are an exception. That tendency doesn’t allow us to take the shelter of Krishna, we don’t feel the urgency to surrender to Krishna. How can we come out of these thoughts or tendencies?

Giriraj Swami: Well, it reminds me of when Maharaja Yudhisthira met Yamaraja, and Yamaraja asked him what is the most amazing thing. The answer was that the most amazing thing is that every day people are dying. “Our father has died, our grandfathers died, our great grandfather and our great, great grandfather. Every day people are dying, but we think we won’t die.

That is the power of illusion or maya, but we should not be in that illusion. Why should we be an exception? Why should we be exempt? That’s a false security or false confidence.

We are not safe and we do need the Lord’s protection, we must take shelter of the Lord, Krishna wants us to do that. And if you are falsely complacent, then the material nature will act in such a way that you’ll be forced to realize that you need Krishna’s shelter. It’s better to seek Krishna’s shelter at every moment, but if you don’t, no problem because material nature will act in such a way that either you will have to seek Krishna’s shelter or you will be battered by the material nature. Yeah, it’s better to accept it willingly and voluntarily before the worst occurs.

There is a very important verse in the Tenth Canto of Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam where Krishna says yasyāham anugṛhṇāmi hariṣye tad-dhanaṁ śanaiḥ. He says that when He is especially mercifully inclined to some devotee who is sincere, who wants to serve Krishna but at the same time has material attachments, Krishna gives him special mercy and takes away all the things he is attached to. And then that poverty-stricken fellow, who is often rejected by his friends and family because he lost everything, he can take shelter of Krishna and Krishna’s devotees. That is special mercy.

Srila Prabhupada had a student, a young man in Delhi who was translating Prabhupada’s books from English into Hindi. One day the boy and the boy’s father came to see Srila Prabhupada, the father had a bad habit of smoking and Srila Prabhupada asked him if he had given up smoking, and the father said no, he hadn’t but isn’t there some special mercy that he could get? And Srila Prabhupada said “Yes, special mercy, there is such a thing.” Then he quoted that verse, yasyāham anugṛhṇāmi hariṣye tad-dhanaṁ śanaiḥ. Krishna says, “The first installment of My special mercy is I take everything away from the devotee.”

So Prabhupada asks the boy’s father, “You asked about special mercy, do you want special mercy?” And the man said “No, no problem, I’ll do it on my own, I don’t need any special mercy.” If we need special mercy to take shelter of Krishna, we’ll get it. Hare Krishna. But otherwise, it’s better to just take shelter on our own at every moment and then we may not require that special mercy. Hare Krishna. Are there any other questions or comments?

Host 2: I don’t see anything in the chat. If someone has any questions, they can raise their hands and ask.

Giriraj Swami: Okay. All right, then we’ll sing the Nṛsiṁha prayers.

[Prayers]

Host 2: Hare Krishna Maharaja. Thank you again for wonderfully enlightening us with so many good examples that we can really cherish and lead in our life in these troubled times. Those who want to see this class again, this is available on the ISKCON Orlando Facebook Live page if you want to share with your friends so that they can also benefit and change their lives. Once again, thank you so much Maharaja.

Giriraj Swami: Thank you, my pleasure.
