SB 7.5.32 – The Secret of Becoming Krishna Conscious

July 26, 2021
Zoom hosted by Nitai-Gauarasundara Dasa

Giriraj Swami: Hare Krishna.

I will begin by singing the maṅgala-ācaraṇa prayers and leading a short kirtan and then we will discuss Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam

So my dear devotees who have joined on Zoom I request you, as far as possible, to put on your cameras so we can see your moon-like faces and have a more personal experience of your presence. Today we are reading a very important verse from Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam Canto Seven, Chapter Five: “Prahlada the Saintly Son of Hiranyakasipu.” Text Thirty-two.

oṁ namo bhagavate vāsudevāya

TRANSLATION

Unless they smear upon their bodies the dust of the lotus feet of a Vaiṣṇava completely freed from material contamination, persons very much inclined toward materialistic life cannot be attached to the lotus feet of the Lord, who is glorified for His uncommon activities. Only by becoming Kṛṣṇa conscious and taking shelter at the lotus feet of the Lord in this way can one be freed from material contamination.

PURPORT by Srila Prabhupada

Becoming Kṛṣṇa conscious brings about anartha-apagamaḥ, the disappearance of all anarthas, the miserable conditions we have unnecessarily accepted. The material body is the basic principle of these unwanted miserable conditions. The entire Vedic civilization is meant to relieve one from these unwanted miseries, but persons bound by the laws of nature do not know the destination of life.

COMMENT

So I will pause here to give some context to the present verse. As you know, Prahlada was the saintly son of Hiranyakasipu, the great demon. And Hiranyakasipu considered himself to be the enemy of Lord Vishnu or rather, he considered Lord Vishnu to be his enemy because Lord Vishnu in the form of Varahadeva, had killed Hiranyakasipu’s brother Hiraṇyakṣa. Hiranyakasipu, being a great materialist, wanted his son Prahlada to be trained also, to be a strong materialist. And he entrusted Prahlada to be educated by Sunanda and Amarka who were two brahman sons of Sukracharya, who is the guru of the demons.

One day, Hiranyakasipu asked his son what was the best thing he had learned from his teachers. And Prahlada replied

śravaṇaṁ kīrtanaṁ viṣṇoḥ smaraṇaṁ pāda-sevanam
arcanaṁ vandanaṁ dāsyaṁ sakhyam ātma-nivedanam

The nine processes of devotional service, Nava-vidhā-bhakti. When Hiranyakasipu heard Prahlada’s answer which was favorable to the devotional service of Vishnu, he became angry at the boy’s teachers and accused them of teaching Prahlada wrong things. And the teachers replied, “We have not taught him these things.” Then Hiranyakasipu challenged, “Well then you are allowing Vaishnavas in disguise to infiltrate the school.” And they said, “No we are not.” Then Hiranyakasipu asked, “Then how did Prahlada learn this devotion to Vishnu?” And the teachers said, “We don’t know, you better ask him directly.”

So when he was asked, Prahlada replied with three verses of which today’s verse is the third and the culmination. And in the first verse, Prahlada Maharaja says “matir na kṛṣṇe parataḥ svato .” That means that one’s inclination towards Krishna are never aroused by the efforts of others, by one’s own efforts, or by a combination of the efforts of others and one’s own efforts. So it would seem that logically all possible alternatives have been eliminated. You can’t become Krishna conscious by your own efforts or by the efforts of others, or by the combined efforts of yourself with others. And then he said, na te viduḥ svārtha-gatiṁ hi viṣṇuṁ, that people, svārtha, means one’s self-interest; and as Srila Prabhupada says, it is natural that one should be concerned with one’s own self-interest, but one has to know what one’s real self-interest is.

So Prahlada Maharaja says, na te viduḥ svārtha-gatiṁ hi viṣṇuṁthat our real self-interest is Vishnu; to serve Vishnu, and to go back to Vishnu. And then he comes to today’s verse which explains the mystery of how one can become Krishna conscious; by bowing down at the lotus feet of a pure devotee. And indirectly Prahlada was telling his father, “You don’t have to worry about becoming Krishna conscious because you are too proud, you will never bow down to the lotus feet of the pure devotee so you don’t need to worry about that.”

So now I will return to the purport.

PURPORT (continued)

The entire Vedic civilization is meant to relieve one from these unwanted miseries

COMMENT

And we all know anarthas to mean unwanted things within the heart; bad habits, bad qualities. And those also are removed by the same process.

PURPORT (continued)

The entire Vedic civilization is meant to relieve one from these unwanted miseries, but persons bound by the laws of nature do not know the destination of life.

COMMENT

na te viduḥ svārtha-gatiṁ hi viṣṇuṁ.

PURPORT (continued)

As described in the previous verse, īśa-tantryām uru-dāmni baddhāḥ: they are conditioned by the three strong modes of material nature. The education that keeps the conditioned soul bound life after life is called materialistic education.

COMMENT

And that is what Hiranyakasipu tried to arrange for his son to make him a powerful materialist. But Prahlada had another teacher apart from the two sons of Sukracharya, and that teacher was none other than the great saint—the devotee Narada Muni. Because during the fighting between the demons and the demigods, at one stage the demigods got the upper hand and they took custody of Hiranyakasipu’s wife, Kayadhu, who was pregnant. And the demigods wanted to kill her because they thought that she was bearing within her womb another great demon like Hiranyakasipu. But Narada Muni intervened and he said, “No, within her womb she is carrying a great devotee.” So the demigods being devotees and accepting Narada as their guru, accepted his words and they circumambulated Prahlada’s mother with him in the womb. And Narada took custody of Kayadhu and the unborn Prahlada, and brought her to his ashram and in his ashram, he instructed her about spiritual life. And Prahlada within the womb was hearing the instructions. In fact, there is a chapter in Śrīmad-Bhāgavatam, what Prahlada learned in the womb.

So apart from his materialistic teachers Prahlada had his divine teacher, Narada Muni, from whom he had learned about devotional service to Vishnu. And Prahlada also says “komara acharat pragya bhagavat dharma eha“—that the science of Bhagavat dharma should be taught to children from the kumara age; that means a very tender age of childhood. And therefore Srila Prabhupada introduced the gurukula system in ISKCON, so children could be educated from a young age about devotional service as recommended by Prahlada Maharaja.

So I will return to the purport.

PURPORT (continued)

The education that keeps the conditioned soul bound life after life is called materialistic education. Śrīla Bhaktivinoda Ṭhākura has explained that materialistic education expands the influence of māyā. Such an education induces the conditioned soul to be increasingly attracted to materialistic life and to stray further and further away from liberation from unwanted miseries.

One may ask why highly educated persons do not take to Kṛṣṇa consciousness. The reason is explained in this verse. Unless one takes shelter of a bona fide, fully Kṛṣṇa conscious spiritual master, there is no chance of understanding Kṛṣṇa. The educators, scholars and big political leaders worshiped by millions of people cannot understand the goal of life and take to Kṛṣṇa consciousness, for they have not accepted a bona fide spiritual master and the Vedas. Therefore in the Muṇḍaka Upaniṣad (3.2.3) it is said, nāyam ātmā pravacanena labhyo na medhayā na bahunā śrutena: one cannot become self-realized simply by having an academic education, by presenting lectures in an erudite way (pravacanena labhyaḥ),

COMMENT

Many of us know the word pravacane – discourse.

PURPORT (continued)

or by being an intelligent scientist who discovers many wonderful things. One cannot understand Kṛṣṇa unless one is graced by the Supreme Personality of Godhead. Only one who has surrendered to a pure devotee of Kṛṣṇa and taken the dust of his lotus feet can understand Kṛṣṇa.

COMMENT

I will repeat that. Only one who has surrendered to a pure devotee of Krishna and taken the dust of his lotus feet can understand Krishna.

So what does it mean to take the dust of the lotus feet of a pure devotee? It can mean literally to bow down at the lotus feet of the pure devotee and take the dust upon one’s head, but that is first of all not always possible and second of all not the essence of the relationship between the candidate and the pure devotee. The real essence of the relationship is to accept the instructions of the pure devotee upon one’s head and to follow the instructions. And it is interesting that once a disciple asked Srila Prabhupada that Lord Chaitanya has given us the eight prayers of the Śikṣāṣṭakam which contain the essence of Krishna consciousness, but accepting a spiritual master is such an important part of Krishna consciousness. But we don’t find that Lord Chaitanya has said anything about a spiritual master in his Śikṣāṣṭakam.

And Srila Prabhupada replied that it is there indirectly in the verse, trinad api sunicena taror api sahishnun. Trinad api sunicena taror api sahishnun means that one should be more humble than the grass. And Srila Prabhupada said if you are humble, you’ll realize that you need help; you’ll realize that you cannot be successful in spiritual life by your own efforts and therefore you need a guru. So indirectly it is there.

So coming back to the purport.

PURPORT (continued)

Only one who has surrendered to a pure devotee of Kṛṣṇa and taken the dust of his lotus feet can understand Kṛṣṇa. First one must understand how to get out of the clutches of māyā. The only means is to become Kṛṣṇa conscious.

COMMENT

And that is also stated in the Bhagavad-gītā by the Supreme authority Krishna, the Supreme Lord Krishna. daivī hy eṣā guṇa-mayī mama māyā duratyayāthat this material energy consisting of the three modes is very difficult to overcome. daivī hy eṣā guṇa-mayī mama māyā duratyayā, mām eva ye prapadyante )—but one who has surrendered unto me, unto Krishna mām eva ye prapadyante māyām etāṁ taranti te—can easily cross over maya. So, first one must understand how to get out of the clutches of maya; the only means is to become Krishna conscious.

PURPORT (continued)

And to become Kṛṣṇa conscious very easily, one must take shelter of a realized soul — a mahat, or mahātmā — whose only interest is to engage in the service of the Supreme Lord. As the Lord says in Bhagavad-gītā (9.13):

mahātmānas tu māṁ pārtha
daivīṁ prakṛtiṁ āśritāḥ
bhajanty ananya-manaso
jñātvā bhūtādim avyayam

“O son of Pṛthā, those who are not deluded, the great souls, are under the protection of the divine nature. They are fully engaged in devotional service because they know Me as the Supreme Personality of Godhead, original and inexhaustible.”

COMMENT

So here, Prahlada Maharaja is recommending that one surrender unto a mahat or mahatma. So we have to be able to recognize a mahat or mahatma, and therefore Srila Prabhupada has quoted this verse Bhagavad-gītā 9.13 which describes a mahatma. There is another verse in the Bhagavad-gītā that describes mahatma –

bahūnāṁ janmanām ante
 jñānavān māṁ prapadyate
 vāsudevaḥ sarvam iti
 sa mahātmā su-durlabhaḥ

After acquiring knowledge for many lifetimes, one who is actually wise surrenders to Krishna. Such a great soul is very rare. So a mahatma is a surrendered soul to Krishna.

PURPORT (continued)

Therefore, to end the unwanted miseries of life, one must become a devotee.

COMMENT

Who wants to end the unwanted miseries of life? We all do. Therefore, we should take shelter of the lotus feet of a devotee and ourselves become devotees.

PURPORT (continued)

yasyāsti bhaktir bhagavaty akiñcanā
sarvair guṇais tatra samāsate surāḥ

“One who has unflinching devotional faith in Kṛṣṇa consistently manifests all the good qualities of Kṛṣṇa and the demigods.” (Bhāg. 5.18.12)

COMMENT

So to be a devotee means to have the qualities of devotee; to have all good qualities. And the Caitanya-caritāmṛta mentions TWENTY-SIX but the main qualification is Krishnah sharanam —to have taken complete shelter of Krishna. If one has the other twenty-five qualities but not the one essential quality of Krishnah sharanam, then the other twenty-five qualities are of no particular value. But if one has the one quality of Krishnah sharanam having taken exclusive shelter of Krishna, then all the other good qualities will manifest themselves as stated here. One who has unflinching devotional faith in Krishna, consistently manifests all the good qualities of Krishna and the demigods.

COMMENT

Here is another definition of mahatma.

PURPORT (continued)

“Only unto those great souls who have implicit faith in both the Lord and the spiritual master are all the imports of Vedic knowledge automatically revealed.” (Śvetāśvatara Upaniṣad 6.23)

COMMENT

Once Srila Prabhupada asked his disciple Guru Kripa, “What is the most important verse in the Vedic scriptures?” And Guru Kripa replied

harer nāma harer nāma
harer nāmaiva kevalam
kalau nāsty eva nāsty eva
nāsty eva gatir anyathā
.”

And Srila Prabhupada replied, “No!”

yasya deve parā bhaktir
yathā deve tathā gurau
tasyaite kathitā hy arthāḥ
prakāśante mahātmanaḥ”

Only unto those great souls who have implicit faith in both the Lord and the spiritual master are all the imports of Vedic knowledge automatically revealed. And continuing on the purport:

PURPORT (continued)

yam evaiṣa vṛṇute tena labhyas
tasyaiṣa ātmā vivṛṇute tanūṁ svām

“The Lord is obtained only by one whom He Himself chooses. To such a person He manifests His own form.” (Muṇḍaka Upaniṣad 3.2.3)

COMMENT

So that is Muṇḍaka Upaniṣad 3.2.3 and we read earlier from that same verse in the purport that, Nāyam ātmā pravacanena labhyo na medhayā na bahunā śrutenaone cannot become self-realized by having an academic education, by presenting lectures in an erudite way, or being an intelligent scientist who discovers wonderful things. But the Lord is obtained by one whom he himself chooses. To such a person he manifests his own form. And the Lord does that with a devotee who has surrendered to his devotee. As Krishna says to Arjuna in the hari-purana—one who claims to be my devotee is not actually my devotee; but one who is the devotee of my devotee he is my true devotee.

PURPORT (continued)

These are Vedic injunctions. One must take shelter of a self-realized spiritual master, not a materially educated scholar or politician. One must take shelter of a niṣkiñcana,

COMMENT

Niṣkiñcana literally means one without anything; who has nothing to do with the material world; who is fully devoted to Krishna consciousness.

PURPORT (continued)

One must take shelter of a niṣkiñcana, a person engaged in devotional service and free from material contamination. That is the way to return home, back to Godhead.

COMMENT

Hare Krishna.

I would like to thank Sriman Nitai-Gaurasundara for inviting us for our monthly satsaṅga on the last Monday of every month, or the fourth Monday of every month and for choosing this beautiful verse and purport.

So now we can open the floor to devotees. If any of you have any questions or comments, any reflections on what we have discussed, you can raise your hand; your physical hand or your virtual hand.

I see Navadvipa Chandra dasa has raised his virtual hand.

Devotee: Hare Krishna Guru Maharaja. Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada. Guru Maharaja, my question is that we are reading Dāmodara-līlā, it says that there are two fingers too short represent endeavor and the mercy. And the verse that you spoke about Matir na kṛṣṇe parato svato vā, in that, it talks about that none of the efforts, whether our own individual efforts or somebody else’s efforts won’t help. So it is only mercy, it seems like it is only mercy. So how do we understand the difference between the two and what does endeavor actually mean? What do we have to do on our heart?

Giriraj Swami: That is a good question. Navadvipa Chandra Prabhu quotes the Dāmodara-līlā, that to be successful one has to make one’s own endeavor and also receive Krishna’s mercy. As you know, Mother Yasoda was trying to bind Krishna with ropes. In fact, the name Dāmodara-dāma means rope and odara means belly. So she was trying to bind Krishna with ropes but the lengths of the ropes were always two fingers too short or two inches too short. But eventually Krishna, seeing the hard labor of Mother Yasoda became merciful to her, and allowed her to bind Him. And there are two Sanskrit words in the verse; one is pariśrama which means hard labor and the other is kṛṣṇa-kṛpā which means Krishna’s mercy. And our acharyas explain that that distance of two fingers or two inches was covered – one, by her efforts—pariśrama; and the other by Krishna’s mercy, and we need that combination.

So now that Chandra Prabhu is raising the question that here Prahlada Maharaja seems to be emphasizing only mercy, because he says one cannot be Krishna conscious by one’s own efforts or the efforts of others, or the combination of the efforts of others and oneself. But one’s effort comes when one accepts a spiritual master; one’s effort comes when one endeavors to follow the instructions of the spiritual master. So that is where the endeavor comes and yes the combination—yasya prasādād bhagavat-prasādo, the combination of endeavoring to serve the spiritual master and please the spiritual master combined with the spiritual master’s mercy, which is followed by Krishna’s mercy, makes the devotee successful.

tad viddhi praṇipātena paripraśnena sevayā, so sevayā – once you approach the spiritual master, one should surrender to the spiritual master tad viddhi praṇipātena paripraśnena—once you to inquire submissively; sevayā – that render menial services. So yes, we have to make that much effort.

Devotee: Guru Maharaja, I have one more question. Can I ask?

Giriraj Swami: All right.

Devotee: So you spoke about the twenty-six qualities and spoke about Kṛṣṇa eka saranamthat is the primary quality. So how much effort we have to do to develop those other twenty-five qualities or will it something that will automatically come if we perform bhakti?

Giriraj Swami: We should do both. Of course engage in bhakti-yoga, which will purify the heart—ceto-darpaṇa-mārjanam—and bring out our natural good qualities. But we can also make an effort. Once I was present in the room with His Holiness Radhanath Swami, and someone asked him about humility, how he became so humble, and he said that he had to practice. So we have to practice and then it becomes second habit. Habit is second nature but in the beginning we may have to practice those qualities. Make an effort to manifest those qualities.

Devotee: Thank you.

Giriraj Swami: Nitai-Gaurasundara, you raised your hand for what reason?

Devotee: Yes, Maharaja. The reason I chose this verse, is because you are the purport of this verse.

Giriraj Swami: It is funny you mentioned that because I was thinking that Srila Prabhupada was the purport of the verse.

Devotee: But reading the book Maharaja, can you give a little idea how you got that faith and total dedication to Srila Prabhupada?

Giriraj Swami: You are referring to my book “I will Build you a Temple—The Juhu Story?”

Devotee: Yes Maharaja.

Giriraj Swami: Well, thank you for choosing this verse and thank you for honoring me by saying that I was the purport of the verse.

Maybe we should conclude now.

Devotee: Maharaja, there was a question on the chat.

Giriraj Swami: Oh, okay.

Devotee: You want me to read it Maharaja?

Giriraj Swami: Please do.

Devotee: It is from Karthikeya Turker. Hare Krishna Guru Maharaja. Daṇḍavat praṇāma. Thank you for such beautiful and important instruction. My question is, how we can develop complete surrender and depend completely on the mercy of Guru or Krishna? My answer will be, to read your book.

Giriraj Swami: That is a beautiful answer. I see Karthikeya is with us; she is nodding her head in agreement, so I accept that answer. Thank you very much.

Malati dasi has her virtual hand raised.

Devotee: Hare Krishna Guru Maharaja. Please accept my humble obeisances. All glories to Srila Prabhupada, all glories to you. Guru Maharaja you said that when you have to have qualities in yourself you have to practice; and if you have bad qualities and you want to drive them away from you, then what is the procedure?

Giriraj Swami: How to become free from bad qualities?

Devotee: Yes, Guru Maharaja.

Giriraj Swami: Well again, there are two answers. Those bad qualities are anarthas, and this verse is telling us how to become free from anarthas by surrendering to a pure devotee. And every bad quality is the opposite of a good quality, so you can work on developing good quality. It is the opposite of bad quality that you want to be free from, and we discussed how to do that. You just practice. Practicing  until it comes easily.

Devotee: Thank you, Guru Maharaja.

Giriraj Swami: Hari Krishna, his actual name is Vishal Patel from Houston.

Devotee: Hare Krishna. Guru Maharaja, it says in the purport that first one must understand how to get out of the clutches of maya; the only means is to become Krishna conscious, and to become Krishna conscious very easily, one must take shelter from a realized soul. What is some of the reasons why somebody does not want to take shelter in a realized soul? You mentioned that if you are humble, you realize you need help. Now, I need help but I think one time you said that people don’t like thinking, some people don’t like being initiated because they think that the spiritual master will try to get some service out of them. You also said where you wrote that article, “Service to Guru now, Higher Duty.” What is stopping me from accepting that?

Giriraj Swami: Your mind.

Devotee: My mind, that is true. Hare Krishna.

Giriraj Swami: My mind is my best friend of the living entity and the worst enemy, so yes.

Devotee: What is a good way to get my mind to become my best friend? What is a good way?

Giriraj Swami: Well, chanting and hearing. And association is very important. Srila Prabhupada said 90 percent of Krishna consciousness is association, so if you keep association with good devotees that will help you a lot. Just keep going. Don’t give up, keep trying. How are your rounds?

Devotee: Actually, I haven’t changed it since that. I have been doing a lot of service but I heard this class the other day and there you said that if we are so busy doing service and we can’t read, that is okay. But what about if I am so busy, for example, I could sit down and chant sixteen rounds if I get enough sleep, but right now I would rather do some practical service than sit and chant Hare Krishna. Hare Krishna means engagement in service, but if I see some service, I would rather just do that rather than chant Hare Krishna. I can chant Hare Krishna; it is difficult for me to do it, but I would rather not do it. I would rather do something practical.

Giriraj Swami: How long does it take you to chant sixteen rounds?

Devotee: Depends, probably just under two hours generally.

Giriraj Swami: So chant for two hours and give service for the rest of the time.

Devotee: Yes, exactly. I am trying to get to that stage, but every time I come home late. I need some special help; I am getting there slowly. That day I was supposed to make a vow in that meeting. I said I am going to try; that is why I don’t want to lie. But Jayananda Prabhu, I think that he could chant his rounds first and then do service all day. So he is a good example. I am trying to follow him.

Giriraj Swami: Who?

Devotee: Jayananda Prabhu.

Giriraj Swami: Jayananda Prabhu. So also the temple president in Los Angeles, he gets up at two o’clock in the morning and chants his rounds before maṅgala-ārati. Because as the temple president, anything could come up at any time that he would have to deal with, and so he wants to get his rounds done first. He gets up at two o’clock and chants rounds before maṅgala-ārati

Devotee: In the Gītā in Chapter Twelve it says that if you can’t do this, do this; if you can’t do this, do this. There is some concession that Krishna gives, but for initiation I have to do sixteen rounds. For initiation it is required.

Giriraj Swami: It is.

Devotee: Okay, thank you. Hare Krishna.

Giriraj Swami: Hare Krishna. Ayushi’s hand is up. Unmute yourself Ayushi’s, please.

Devotee: Hare Krishna Guru Maharaja. Please accept my most humble obeisances. Jaya Srila Prabhupada. Guru Maharaja, in the purport that you just discussed today there is one statement that is mentioned that the Lord is obtained only by one whom He Himself chooses. So, Guru Maharaja, does that mean that Krishna is biased to some people like His devotees, and does that mean that He is partial? Because Krishna wants to claim everyone back home, back to Godhead, but I could not really understand this statement that Lord is obtained only by one whom He Himself chooses.

Giriraj Swami: Yes, Krishna wants us all to come back home, back to Godhead but it depends on us. We also have to follow the process, and the process begins, ādau guru-pādāśraya—by taking shelter of the lotus feet of the spiritual master; the very first item in devotional service ādau guru-pādāśraya; and then dīkṣādi take initiation; śīkṣādi receive instruction. Those are the first three items. yasya prasādād bhagavat-prasādo—when the spiritual master gives his mercy then Krishna will give His mercy.

Devotee: Thank you, Guru Maharaja. Hare Krishna.

Giriraj Swami: Well, if there are no more questions and comments we can end. I would like to conclude with Vaishnava praṇāma. Let us offer our respectful obeisances unto all the Vaishnava devotees of the Lord, who are just like desired trees who can fulfill the desires of everyone. They are full of compassion for the fallen conditioned souls.

Devotee: Thank you Maharaja for showering your mercy one more time. See you next fourth Monday of the August Maharaja. Thank you.

Giriraj Swami: Okay. One of those Mondays, I don’t know if it is the fourth though, one of the Mondays is Janmashtami, but anyway unless it is Janmashtami, I will.

Devotee: Yes, Maharaja.

Giriraj Swami: Thank you very much.
